●​ Abstract

​​Hybrid films comprising inorganic and organic components tailored at molecular length scales are used in a wide range of emerging technologies. These include protective transparent coatings for sensors, smart windows and stretchable electronics, display and photovoltaic devices, membranes in fuel cells, reinforcements in Li-ion battery electrolytes, and dielectric layers in microelectronics devices and their packages. I will showcase several examples from our research involving the molecular design and processing of high-performance adhesive interlayers, transparent protective coatings for moisture sensitive device technologies, transparent conducting films for flexible electronics and stiffening reinforcements in battery electrolytes. Specifically, I discuss the molecular design of such multi-functional hybrids, new methods for processing using atmospheric plasma processing in air at low temperature, and metrologies to characterize the adhesive and degradation processes that are important for reliable application over extended operating lifetimes.
